Fit to travel step by step guide
1) Order your test
- This test is for anyone who is leaving the UK and needs to show evidence of a negative COVID-19 test.
- This test is not for children under 5 years old. Children under 5 do not need a test.
If you are unsure if this test is for you or have any queries about your order, you can contact our Customer Support team on 020 3588 0292, 7 days a week.
2) Check travel guidelines
Review the travel guidelines for your destination so you know when to take your test. For most countries, this will be within 72 hours before departure.
3) Activate and take your test
When it’s time to take your test, follow the instructions included with your test kit to activate and take your test.
Do not forget to note down your P number. You can find this on the outside of your test kit box and on the sheet of stickers you need to attach to your sample.
4) Return your test
If you are posting your test, you must make a note of your Royal Mail tracking ID. You will need this number to identify your test if there are any delivery issues. You can find this number under the barcode on the postal tracking label attached to your test kit.
Please note: If you post your test kit on a Sunday, there may be delays in receiving your results. We recommend posting on Saturday before 12pm if possible.
5) Get results
You will receive your test results and certificate (if you test negative) in your patient account within 48 hours of receipt by Royal Mail.
You must remember to have your results and certificate available at the airport.

More about Fit to Travel
Getting your Fit to Travel certificate
We make getting a Fit to Travel certificate easy:
- Order your COVID-19 test kit.
- We offer next day delivery (when you order before 4pm Monday to Friday, excluding bank holidays) but recommend ordering your kit at least 7 days before leaving the UK.
- Collect your test sample using the instructions provided in the test kit.
IMPORTANT: Be sure to check the regulations of the country you are travelling to as this will affect when you need to take your test before you travel. For most countries, this is usually 72 hours.
- On the day you take your test, you must activate your kit online, using ZAVA’s quick and easy activation form.
- Return your completed test to one of our drop-off points. You can also return by post using the prepaid envelope provided with your test kit.
- If you test negative for COVID-19, we will give you your results via your online ZAVA account. We will email you to let you know when your results and certificate are available to download from your account.
If you test positive, we will also give you your results via your online ZAVA account. This means that you currently have coronavirus. You should self isolate immediately and follow government advice to protect yourself and the people around you. Unfortunately, this means you will not be able to travel, even if you do feel well.
Eurostar, Eurotunnel and cross channel ferry operators now ask travellers to provide evidence of a recent negative COVID-19 PCR test before travel. Our Fit to Travel certificate can be used as proof of a negative COVID-19 test.
Please check the requirements of Eurostar, Eurotunnel or your ferry operator before travelling. You will also need to check guidelines set by your destination country. Rules on when you need to take your test, the type of test and certificate details can change at short notice.
ZAVA’s Fit to Travel kit uses the PCR (RT-PCR method) swab test, which is the same test used by the NHS and Public Health England. It’s also accepted by all major airlines and embassies.
Next day delivery: Get your test kit the next day if you place your order before 4pm Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays).
Fit to Travel within 36 hours: If you test negative for COVID-19, you can download your Fit to Travel certificate within 36 hours of returning your test to a drop-off point. Or within 48 hours if you return your test by post. See “Returning your completed test” below for more information.
We recommend ordering your COVID-19 Fit to Travel test kit at least 7 working days before your journey. You will need to wait until the deadline to take your test sample. The deadline depends on your travel destination but is usually 72 hours or 96 hours ahead of your departure.
Your destination country will have specific rules on when to test before your journey. So don’t forget to check with your travel provider.
You can also visit Gov.uk for more information, including regular updates.
You can return your completed test by post or in person to a drop-off location.
Postal return: Post your sample to a Royal Mail priority post box using the prepaid Tracked24 envelope included with your test. Your results will be ready within 48 hours if you return by post. IMPORTANT: If returning your test via post, please check the collection time for the priority post boxes near you to make sure you post before the last priority collection. Failure to do so may result in additional delays. Check priority post box times.
Drop-off return: Return your completed test to one of our drop-off locations to get your results in 36 hours (if dropped off before cut off).
Please make sure you note down your tracking number before returning your sample. You will need this to track when your sample has been delivered to the laboratory. If you find that it has not been marked as ‘delivered’ within 24 hours, please contact our Customer Support Team. We do not take responsibility for any sample being lost in transit.
Where you’re travelling will also affect when you need to take your test and when you’ll need your certificate, so make sure you check your destination guidelines before getting started. You can look up the requirements for the location you’re travelling to on the Foreign Travel Advice pages on Gov.uk.
If you’re unsure or worried that your journey times don’t allow for your results to be ready, you can call our Customer Support team for advice on 0203 8083 239.
ZAVA does not accept any responsibility or liability for any costs arising from any delay, disruption or cancellation of your travel plans directly or indirectly caused by the requirement to produce a travel certificate.
It is your responsibility to check your destination's travel restrictions and requirements, including when you need to have completed your test. This time will vary depending on guidelines set by your destination country, Eurostar, Eurotunnel or your ferry operator. It can be anything between 48 hours and 7 days before departure. This timeframe is also subject to change depending on the airline or destination.
Please make sure you've checked these requirements and the time frame before booking your test so that you can make sure you have your certificate in time before you travel.
If you do not activate your test kit, you will not receive your results. Please remember to activate it and note down all relevant tracking information.
