More about Test to Release (Day 5 testing)
How Test to Release works
If you have not received 2 doses of an NHS administered vaccine and you’re entering England directly from an amber list country, you need to quarantine for 10 days when you arrive. Test to Release allows you to reduce your quarantine time by taking an extra COVID-19 test on day 5 of your quarantine period. If you test negative for COVID-19 you may be allowed to leave quarantine early.
All you have to do is:
- Order your Test to Release kit
- Make a note of your order reference number - you'll need it for your Passenger Locator Form when entering the UK
- Activate and take your test on day 5 of your quarantine*
- Pack and return your sample via Royal Mail priority post box using the prepaid Tracked24 envelope included Don’t forget to write down your tracking reference number and post your test before the last priority collection to ensure there are no delays. Check priority post box times.
- You should get your results within 48 hours in your patient account allowing you to stop isolating if your test is negative. We’ll email you to let you know when they’re in.
If you test negative for COVID-19, you can end your quarantine (you must still take your day 8 test). If you test positive, you must continue to quarantine, and we will send you information on what to do next.
* If you land on a Monday, Tuesday would be your first day of quarantine, so you would take your test on Saturday. Please make sure you remember to take your test at the correct time, or you will not be able to leave quarantine.

If you haven't received 2 doses of an NHS administered vaccine and you’re entering England directly from an amber list country, you need to quarantine for 10 days when you arrive. During this time, you must take a COVID-19 test within the first 2 days and between days 8 and 10 of your quarantine before you are allowed to leave.
With Test to Release, you take an additional test on day 5 of your quarantine, allowing you to leave quarantine early, providing you test negative for COVID-19. You will still need to take a Day 8 test even if your Test to Release comes back negative.
-
-
Test to Release is ideal if you:
- have not received 2 doses of an NHS administered vaccine (or your second dose was less than 14 days before travel)
- are entering England directly from an amber list country
- want to leave quarantine early (subject to a negative test result).
This test is not a government requirement, so if you do not need to leave quarantine early, you do not need to take it. You will still need to take Day 2 and Day 8 tests.
-
-
You should take your Test to Release on day 5 of your quarantine period. It’s vital you take your test on the day you state when you activate your test, or you will not be able to leave quarantine even if you test negative.
Remember, the day you arrive in England is day 0 of your quarantine. Day 1 of your quarantine is the day after you land and your first full 24 hours in the country. So, if you land in England on a Monday, Tuesday will be your first day of quarantine, and you will need to take your Test to Release on Saturday.
-
-
You should return your completed test the same day you take your test. This is to make sure your sample reaches our lab as quickly as possible without contamination.
-
-
You can return your completed test by posting your sample via a Royal Mail priority post box using the prepaid Tracked24 envelope included. IMPORTANT: If returning your test via post, please check the collection time for the priority post boxes near you to make sure you post before the last priority collection. Failure to do so may result in additional delays. Check priority post box times.
Find your nearest priority post box
Please make sure you note down your tracking number before returning your sample. You will need this to track when your sample has been delivered to the laboratory. If you find that it has not been marked as ‘delivered’ within 24 hours, please contact our Customer Support Team. We do not take responsibility for any sample being lost in transit.

If you test positive for COVID-19 on your Test to Release and have symptoms of the virus, you must quarantine at home for 10 days starting from the day your symptoms started. If you do not have symptoms, you must isolate for 10 days starting from the day you took your test.
Anyone you live with or have travelled with must also quarantine at home for 10 days from the day you took your test.
-
-
If your results are inconclusive, you must continue to quarantine and take your Day 8 test as normal. You will not be able to leave quarantine early if your results are inconclusive as there will be no way to confirm you do not have COVID-19.

When posting your test, it is your responsibility to make sure you use a Royal Mail priority post box and post your test before the last priority collection of the day. You will only receive your results in 48 hours from when Royal Mail receives your test. Posting your test after the last collection will delay receiving your results.
If you would like to track your parcel with Royal Mail, you need to record the tracking ID.
It is your responsibility to follow quarantine guidelines and make sure you take your Test to Release at the correct time in accordance with UK guidelines.
You must activate your test kit in order to receive your results. If you do not activate your test kit, you will not receive your results, you will not be able to leave quarantine and you will not be eligible for a refund.
