Frequently asked questions

Can a woman catch thrush from a man?

Yes, a woman can get thrush from a man. Thrush is not an STI, but it can sometimes be passed on or triggered through sex.

How long does male thrush take to clear up?

When properly treated, the symptoms of thrush can improve within a few days. The infection should be fully gone within 7 to 14 days of starting treatment.

Why do I keep getting thrush as a man?

If you keep getting thrush, it could be because you:

  • have an underlying condition like diabetes
  • have a weakened immune system
  • did not finish your previous treatment
  • have poor hygiene
  • are overweight or obese
  • are not circumcised

If the thrush keeps coming back, you should speak to your doctor.

Can men get thrush from antibiotics?

Antibiotics, especially broad-spectrum ones, can increase the likelihood of getting thrush as they kill off beneficial bacteria in the body. This can allow Candida to overgrow, causing thrush. Antibiotics can sometimes weaken the immune system, which can make people more susceptible to infections like thrush.
