What is Wegovy?
Wegovy (semaglutide) is a weight loss injection that helps reduce appetite and makes you feel fuller for longer. It works by mimicking a natural hormone in your body and is taken once a week using a simple injection pen. Wegovy is most effective when used alongside a lower-calorie diet and regular activity.
How does Wegovy work?
Wegovy injections contain semaglutide, which mimics a natural hormone in your body that is released after you eat (glucagon-like peptide-1 or GLP-1) to make you feel fuller and help control your blood sugar.
It sends signals to your brain that you’ve eaten, which reduces your appetite levels. It also increases the time it takes for food to empty from your stomach, so you feel fuller for longer after eating. This can stop you overeating or snacking, making it easier to stick to your weight loss plan. Taking it once a week keeps the level of semaglutide in your body constant, which helps you feel fuller.

Beyond weight loss, Wegovy has also been shown to have significant benefits for heart health. In clinical trials, it was found to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular issues such as heart attack and stroke.
For a comprehensive understanding of Wegovy, watch our informational video guide led by one of our in-house doctors, Dr Crystal Wyllie: Everything you need to know about Wegovy
How long does Wegovy take to work?
After you start your treatment, you should feel fuller after eating by the second or third dose. But since people react differently to medications, it might work slightly faster or slower for you. You could see Wegovy weight loss results as early as 12 weeks after starting treatment. If you have not lost significant weight after 6 months, you should think about changing your treatment.
How effective is Wegovy?
Wegovy is a highly effective weight loss treatment. Clinical studies show that patients lose an average of 21% of their starting weight after 72 weeks of treatment. Studies show:
- around 6% weight loss at early doses
- around 10 to 12% at mid-range doses
- average of 21% at the full dose
Wegovy dosage and routine
When taking Wegovy, you’ll start on the lowest dose which is slowly increased over time. This helps your body get used to the medication, which reduces the chances of side effects.
Each dose step takes at least 4 weeks before moving on to the next one. Each pen contains 4 doses so you'll use 1 pen for each dose step.
- Weeks 1 to 4: Start with the 0.25mg dose once weekly. This is a starter dose that helps your body get used to the medication.
- Weeks 5 to 8: The dose is increased to 0.5mg once weekly.
- After week 8: Your doctor may increase your dose every 4 weeks if more weight control is needed. The available maintenance doses are 1mg, 1.7mg, 2.4mg, and 7.2mg. The maximum dose is 7.2mg.
If you’re seeing good results at lower doses of Wegovy, it may not be necessary to increase your dose. Never increase your dose without talking to your doctor first.
What if I missed a dose of Wegovy?
If you miss a dose by 5 days or less, you can take that dose. Your next one should be taken on your usual day, as long as it’s been at least 3 days since your last injection.
If you miss a dose and it’s more than 5 days, then wait (skip that dose) and take your next dose on the usual day, at the usual time.
If you want to change the day of the week you use Wegovy to better suit your needs, you can do so as long as there are more than 3 days between doses.
If the last dose you took was more than 2 weeks ago, you need to restart at the lowest strength dose of 0.25mg weekly, and follow the Wegovy dosage schedule again.
What is the Wegovy maintenance dose?
Once you have reached your goal weight, you may choose to continue managing your weight loss with medication, like Wegovy. This is called maintenance. Your doctor will be able to recommend a suitable maintenance dosage for you based on your personal health, medical history, and previous tolerance to Wegovy.
Common maintenance doses of Wegovy include:
- 1mg
- 1.7mg
- 2.4mg
- 7.2mg
Note that there is no ‘right’ maintenance dose. Everybody responds differently to weight loss treatment. For example, one person may find that taking 1.7mg of Wegovy effectively helps them sustain their progress, whereas another may experience side effects and may need to reduce their dose or switch altogether. It is important to have conversations with your doctor and inform them about your weight loss journey so far, this way they can guide you towards maintaining your weight loss progress in the long-term.

How to use Wegovy
You need to take Wegovy once a week for it to be effective, and it works best as part of a weight loss plan that includes a healthy diet and regular exercise as well. If you’re prescribed Wegovy, you’ll be started on a lower dose in your first month and your dose will be increased each month afterwards (if you respond well to the treatment), until month 6 of your treatment.
To use Wegovy injections safely you should
- only inject Wegovy (semaglutide) into your skin – you should never inject it into a vein or muscle
- inject Wegovy once a week, at around the same time
- take Wegovy exactly as instructed by your doctor
Always follow your doctor’s instructions. Read through the patient information leaflet and user manual carefully before taking Wegovy. Once you have chosen a day and time that suits you to inject, you can prepare to take it.
Wegovy doses 0.25mg, 0.5, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg are administered via a multi-dose pen. The 7.2mg Wegovy pen on the other hand is a single-dose pen, this means that over 4 weeks you will use 4 single-use pens over that time, one pen per week. For more detailed instructions on using the Wegovy 7.2 pen, read the specific patient information leaflet.
Step 1: Preparation
- Prepare your pen: Check your pen and make sure it is the correct medication and dose, and that the medication is not damaged or expired. The liquid should be clear and colourless.
- Wash your hands: Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
Step 2: Attach a new needle
- Take a new needle and tear off the paper tab.
- Push the needle straight onto the pen and twist clockwise until it is tight.
- Pull off the outer needle cap (keep this for later).
- Pull off the inner needle cap and throw it away.
Step 3: Check the flow (first use of a new pen only)
- Checking the flow is also known as priming. You only need to do this once for each new pen to ensure it’s working correctly.
- Turn the dose selector until the dose counter shows the flow check symbol (two dots).
- Press and hold the dose button until the counter returns to 0. A drop of liquid should appear at the needle tip. This shows that the pen is ready for injection.
- If no liquid appears then repeat once more. If it still doesn’t work, use a new needle and try again.
Step 4: Injecting the dose
- Choose your injection site: You can inject the needle into the skin of your abdomen (at least 5cm away from your belly button), your thigh, or your upper arm. Choose a new injection site every week to reduce soreness.
- Select the dose: Turn the dose selector until the counter stops at your prescribed dose (for example, 0.25mg).
- Insert the needle: Gently push the needle all the way into the skin of your chosen injection site.
- Press the button: Press and hold down the dose button. You will hear a click.
- Hold and count: Keep the button pressed and watch the dose counter return to 0. Once it reaches 0, slowly count to 6 before removing the needle from your skin. This ensures you receive the full dose.
Step 5: After your injection
- Remove the needle: Carefully place the outer needle cap back on the needle without touching the needle itself.
- Dispose of the needle: Once the needle is covered, unscrew it from the pen and immediately place it in your sharps bin.
- Store the pen: Put the cap back on your Wegovy pen and store it as instructed.
How to inject Wegovy 7.2mg
Wegovy 7.2mg is administered via a single-dose pen. For 4 weeks supply of Wegovy you will receive 4 pens and you must inject one per week and then safely dispose of it.
For specific guidance on how to use the Wegovy 7.2mg pen, read the patient information leaflet provided with your medication. Follow the instructions here or the specific guidance sent to your ZAVA patient account:
- Check you have the correct dose and the expiry date on the back.
- Check in the dose window that the liquid is clear and colourless, it must not be cloudy.
- Choose your injection site. See detailed guidance on this page.
- Once you are ready to inject, remove the pen cap and needle cover.
- Press the pen firmly against your skin where you have chosen to inject. The injection takes around 5-10 seconds. You should hear 2 clicks. The first click happens when your injection starts, and at the second click you should begin to see a yellow bar in the dose window.
- Once you see the yellow bar stop moving, the injection is complete.
- Lift the pen away slowly and safely dispose of it.
For more detailed guidance, always refer to the patient information leaflet included with your medication. You can also view our step-by-step guide.
Worried about self injecting?
“We understand that it may sound off-putting to self-inject your medication. However, the Wegovy pen is designed in a way that is easy for you to use, even without a clinical professional present. Your Wegovy pen uses a pre-filled injection.” – Dr Zenon Andreou, Chief Medical Officer.
If you request self-injection medication from ZAVA, our doctors will give you advice on how to take it, and you can message them for free through your account if you need extra support
What is the most effective way to inject Wegovy?
No particular injection site will make the medication more effective. The most effective place to inject Wegovy is the one that is most comfortable for you.
Can you stay on Wegovy forever?
Wegovy is most effective when used long-term to help you manage your weight. Studies of Wegovy’s effectiveness for weight loss were conducted over 72 weeks. It’s best to discuss your long-term weight loss plans with a doctor. If you do not see any improvement, your doctor may suggest switching treatment.
What happens when you stop taking Wegovy?
Shortly after you stop your Wegovy treatment, your appetite will increase back to normal levels. If you’re having any side effects, they should also go away after the Wegovy in your body is removed. Wegovy can take about up to 2 months to leave your system completely after your last dose.
What should I do if I miss a dose of Wegovy?
If you have missed a dose, what you should do next will depend on how long it’s been since your next dose was due.
If it’s been 5 days or less since your missed dose, take your dose as soon as you remember to. Then take the dose as normal.
If it’s been more than 5 days since your missed dose, you should skip the missed dose and take your next one on your normal day. Do not take a second dose to make up for the missed one.
Safety and side effects
Like with all medications, Wegovy can have side effects. Though, these may not affect everybody. The gradual increase in doses on Wegovy works to give your body time to adjust to it, lowering the chances of side effects. However, if you happen to experience any very common or common side effects, they should go away as soon as your body adjusts to your treatment.
Very common Wegovy side effects that affect more than 10% of users include:
- headache
- feeling sick
- throwing up
- diarrhoea
- constipation
- stomach pain
- feeling weak or tired
Common side effects that affect up to 10% of users include:
- dizziness
- stomach and digestion problems
- burping
- gas
- bloating
- inflamed stomach
- acid reflux
- gallstone
- hair loss
- reactions where the injection was used
- low blood sugar for people with diabetes
Who should not take Wegovy?
While Wegovy is a safe and effective weight loss medication, it’s not suitable for everyone. This is why you need to give your doctor accurate information about your medical history, so they can make sure it is safe for you to take it.
Wegovy is not suitable for you if you:
- are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding
- have a known allergy to semaglutide or any of the other ingredients in Wegovy
- or a close family member have a history of thyroid problems
Tell your doctor before taking Wegovy if you have a history of:
- pancreatitis
- gallbladder disease
- kidney problems
- diabetic retinopathy
- heart problems
Is Wegovy safe?
Wegovy is a safe and effective weight loss treatment. It was approved for weight loss by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in September 2023. This means that Wegovy is officially safe to use for patients who are prescribed it by a registered health practitioner.
Studies report that it is common to experience side effects as your body adjusts to Wegovy, particularly as your dosage is increased.
In most cases, common and mild side effects of Wegovy can be managed at home and often go away in time.
What are the risks of Wegovy?
As Wegovy can cause vomiting and diarrhoea, it can lead to dehydration if you do not get enough fluids. Make sure to drink plenty of water while taking Wegovy and speak to your doctor if these side effects become severe. They may tell you to stop using Wegovy or lower your dose.
What medications does Wegovy interact with?
Although Wegovy can be an effective and well-tolerated option for weight management, it isn’t the right choice for every individual. That’s why it’s important to share a clear and honest overview of your health history with your doctor, allowing them to determine whether this treatment is appropriate and safe for you.
Wegovy can interact with (not limited to):
- diabetes medications – sulfonylureas, metformin and linagliptin
- antidepressants – fluxetine and tranlycypromine
- ACE inhibitors – losartan and valsartan
- thyroid medication – levothyroxine
Wegovy can sometimes interact with certain antibiotics. It can also impact the absorption and effects of oral contraceptives.
Be sure to tell your doctor what medications you are currently or thinking of taking if you are starting or as you continue your Wegovy treatment.
What foods should I avoid when taking Wegovy?
When using Wegovy for weight management, it works best when paired with nutritious eating habits and regular physical activity. There’s no need to eliminate entire food groups, but focusing on balanced meals will help you get the most from your treatment.
If you experience common side effects like nausea, you may find it helpful to limit certain foods like:
- oily or heavily fried dishes, which can worsen stomach discomfort
- high-sugar snacks, such as sweets, pastries, or chocolate, which can interfere with healthy weight loss
It’s also wise to keep alcohol intake moderate. Large amounts of alcohol can be high in calories and sugar, and may trigger overeating.
Does Wegovy work like insulin?
No, Wegovy is not a type of insulin and therefore it doesn't work in the same way as insulin. It contains the active ingredient semaglutide which is a different class of medications called GLP-1 receptor agonists.
Alternatives and comparisons
Wegovy is an effective treatment for weight loss, but it may not be right for everyone. If Wegovy isn’t right for you, there are a number of other options available to help you with your weight loss journey.
Weight loss injections
Alternative GLP-1 injections to Wegovy (semaglutide) include:
Mounjaro
Mounjaro is another weight loss treatment that was originally used to treat type 2 diabetes, like Ozempic. It contains tirzepatide and is also a prescription-only injection. It works in a similar way to Wegovy to reduce your appetite and help support weight loss alongside diet and exercise. The main difference is that it mimics a second hormone that is thought to enhance the effects of GLP-1.
Liraglutide (generic Saxenda)
Liraglutide (Nevolat) works in almost exactly the same way as Wegovy. The only real differences are the active ingredients, liraglutide instead of semaglutide, and the fact that liraglutide is taken once a day. They both work by reducing your appetite.
Is Saxenda better than Wegovy?
Clinical trials have shown that Wegovy is a more effective weight loss injection, and can lead to more weight loss than Saxenda over the same period of time. However, Wegovy may not be suitable for everybody, so Saxenda is still a good option for those who can’t use Wegovy.
Saxenda is long term out of stock but a generic version, Nevolat, is available. It works in exactly the same way it just has a different name, price and packaging.
Ozempic
Ozempic is another name for semaglutide (the active ingredient in Wegovy). Wegovy is prescribed for patients with or without diabetes for weight loss but Ozempic is only meant to treat people for type 2 diabetes.
Is Ozempic the same as Wegovy?
The active ingredient in both Ozempic and Wegovy is the same, but the dosages are different. This is because the dosage in Ozempic is suitable for managing diabetes, while the dosage in Wegovy is higher as it has a better effect on weight loss.
Ozempic is available in 0.25mg, 0.5mg, or 1mg doses.
Weight loss tablets
Weight loss tablets can be suitable alternatives for those who find it difficult or uncomfortable to take a weekly injection. Weight loss tablets work differently than weight loss injections, and are typically less effective for weight loss, but they are easier to take.

Frequently asked questions
What happens when you stop using Wegovy?
Shortly after you stop your Wegovy treatment, your appetite will increase back to normal levels. If you’re having any side effects, they should also go away after the Wegovy in your body is removed. Wegovy can take about up to 2 months to leave your system completely after your last dose.
Is Wegovy a GLP-1 agonist?
Yes, Wegovy is a GLP-1 receptor agonist, which means it acts like the hormone GLP-1 in your body. This is similar to other weight loss medications like Saxenda, Nevolat and Mounjaro.
Can I take Wegovy when I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
There is not enough evidence to show that Wegovy's active ingredient semaglutide would be safe to take during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Manufacturer guidance for Wegovy states that if you are planning to have a baby you should stop this medication 2 months before a pregnancy. If you are planning pregnancy and are currently taking Wegovy you should speak to your doctor or healthcare provider.
How do I calculate my BMI?
Your body mass index (BMI) is a way to check your health based on your weight and height, and can let you know if you are underweight, healthy, or overweight. The way to calculate your BMI is your weight in kg divided by the square of your height in metres, or BMI = weight(kg)/height(m)2
➤ If you know your weight and height, you can quickly and easily calculate your BMI with our BMI weight loss calculator.
Why am I not losing weight on Wegovy?
If you’re not losing weight while taking Wegovy, then you may want to pay close attention to what you’re eating. Wegovy is most effective while you’re following a balanced and healthy diet, and exercising to burn calories and build muscle. If you are eating unhealthy food, snacking between meals, and not doing any physical activity, then this can hinder your weight loss journey on Wegovy.
You should also make sure you’re taking the medication as intended, as missing doses or not taking them at the right time can make Wegovy less effective.
Finally, some people may have a genetic or medical condition that makes Wegovy less effective for them. If you have been taking Wegovy correctly and sticking to a healthy diet and exercise plan, then speak to your doctor about exploring other treatment options.
