The Foundayo pill contains the active ingredient, orforglipron, which is a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist. It works by binding to the GLP-1 receptors in the brain to suppress your appetite and slow down the time it takes for food to leave your stomach, also known as gastric emptying. This means that food remains in your stomach for longer, so you feel full for longer and are less likely to snack between meals.

The way Foundayo works also makes it easier to follow a diet and exercise plan because it allows you to eat fewer calories and makes you feel less hungry. Like other GLP-1 medications, Foundayo also helps to regulate your blood sugar levels by releasing insulin after you eat.

There are two pharmaceutical forms of orforglipron: film-coated tablets and hard capsules. The film-coated tablets are available from 0.8mg to 17.2mg. The hard capsules (used during the ATTAIN trials) are available in doses from 1mg to 36 mg. The 17.2mg film-coated tablet dose has an equal effect to the 36mg hard capsule.

As Foundayo reduces your appetite, it will make it easier for you to eat less. This will help you move into a calorie deficit, which is where you burn more calories than you eat, and is a key part of weight loss. At the same time, you’ll also need to increase the amount of exercise you do to make sure you are burning more calories than you are consuming. These are key to ensuring Foundayo helps you successfully lose weight.

Foundayo pill vs Wegovy pill

Both the Foundayo pill and the Wegovy pill are oral GLP-1 tablets that are taken once daily. However, there are two key differences:

1. Active ingredients

Foundayo contains orforglipron, while Wegovy contains semaglutide, although they work in similar ways to help you lose weight by reducing your appetite, slowing digestion, and regulating your blood sugar levels.

2. How they are taken

Unlike the Wegovy pill, Foundayo offers more flexibility because it does not require you to fast before taking it or specify any food restrictions. However, in clinical trials, the Wegovy pill has a higher average weight loss of up to 17% over 64 weeks on the highest maintenance dose of 25mg compared to 12.4% at the maximum 17.2mg dose of Foundayo after 72 weeks.

Foundayo pill dosage

Foundayo pills are available in 6 strengths, which are gradually increased over a few months. The starting dose of Foundayo is 0.8mg per day. The dose is then increased every 30 days until you reach the maximum 17.2mg daily dose.

The available Foundayo doses are as follows:

Month 1 (starting dose) – 0.8mg
Month 2 – 2.5mg
Month 3 – 5.5mg
Month 4 – 9mg
Month 5 – 14.5mg
Maximum dose – 17.2mg

Not everyone will reach or need the maximum Foundayo dose. Instead, your doctor will monitor how your body responds to the medication, any side effects you get, and consider your weight loss goals to help you find the lowest effective dose. If you have tolerated your current dose well, you may consider increasing your dose after 30 days.

How to take Foundayo

Foundayo is taken once a day. You can take Foundayo with or without food as there are no fasting requirements when taking this weight loss pill.

You should swallow the tablet whole with water if needed. Do not break, crush, or chew the tablet.

How quickly does Foundayo work?

The active ingredient in Foundayo, orforglipron, starts to suppress your appetite as soon as you take your first dose, however it can take several months to notice the full weight loss benefits of the medication.

How long can you take Foundayo for?

Foundayo is considered to be a long-term treatment for weight loss. In clinical trials, it has been studied for 72 weeks. Your doctor will discuss how long you should take Foundayo for, but it should be safe to continue taking for as long as it remains effective for you and whilst being supervised by a doctor.

Can you just stop taking Foundayo?

Yes, you can just stop it if you want to, but we’d recommend to speak to your doctor first if you are thinking about stopping Foundayo. Although it is possible to stop taking GLP-1 medications, like Foundayo, stopping suddenly can cause your appetite to return and increase the chance of weight gain. It can also cause your blood sugar levels to rise rapidly, especially if you have been taking orforglipron to manage type 2 diabetes.

Side effects of the Foundayo pill

Like all medications, the Foundayo pill can cause side effects. However, they are often mild and improve as your body gets used to the medication. In most cases, mild side effects are manageable at home.

Serious side effects

The following serious side effects have been reported with Foundayo:

inflamed pancreas, which can cause severe pain in your stomach and back that does not go away
sudden changes in your vision
bowel obstruction causing severe stomach pain, bloating or swelling of the stomach, being sick, or not being able to poo or pass wind
severe constipation
serious allergic reaction, symptoms include swelling of your lips, eyes, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing, cold skin, feeling dizzy or weak
increased chance of food or liquid getting into your lungs during surgery or other procedures
severe diarrhoea or vomiting causing dehydration and potential kidney problems

Common Foundayo side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 people) include:

low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) when Foundayo is taken with a sulfonylurea alone or in combination with up to 2 other type 2 diabetes medications
dizziness
headache
fast pulse
low blood pressure

burping
reflux or heartburn
gas
gallstones
hair loss
feeling tired
increased levels of pancreatic enzymes in your blood

Uncommon Foundayo side effects

Uncommon Foundayo side effects (may affect up to 1 in 100 people) are:

low blood sugar when orforglipron is taken without insulin or a sulfonylurea
unusual sense of taste
unpleasant or abnormal feeling when touched

What to do if you get side effects

Most Foundayo side effects are temporary and mild and will go away on their own as your body gets used to orforglipron. However, you can manage them at home by:

eating smaller more frequent meals – aim to eat 6 smaller meals over the course of the day rather than 3 large meals
choosing plain, bland foods – for example, rice and crackers, if you feel sick
drinking plenty of water to prevent dehydration, especially if you are sick, have diarrhoea or constipation, or are getting headaches
getting plenty of rest until you feel better
slowly introducing fibre into your diet, especially if you get diarrhoea
taking over-the-counter painkillers, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, to manage headaches

If you get any side effects that get worse, do not improve, or are difficult to manage, contact your doctor for more advice. If you have severe stomach pain, are vomiting and cannot keep water down, or feel very unwell, get urgent medical help.

Who can take the Foundayo pill

The Foundayo pill may be right for:

people who have a BMI of 30 or more
people who have a BMI of 27 or more and a weight-related health condition, like high blood pressure
people who are already receiving weight loss treatment and want to switch

The Foundayo pill is suitable for adults who have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above or 27 or above with weight-related health conditions, such as prediabetes, high blood pressure, or obstructive sleep apnoea, though sometimes our doctors may consider starting this treatment off-label if you would safely benefit from it.

Who should not use the Foundayo pill?

The Foundayo pill may not be suitable for everyone. There are some medical conditions or medications that may make Foundayo unsuitable for you, as they may make orforglipron less effective or potentially unsafe.

Do not take Foundayo if you are allergic to orforglipron or any of the other ingredients listed in the medication, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

You will also need to tell your doctor before taking Foundayo if you:

have or have ever had pancreatitis
are using a sulfonylurea and/or insulin for diabetes
have severe problems with food digestion or food staying in your stomach for longer than usual (severe gastroparesis)
have kidney problems because some Foundayo side effects, like feeling and being sick and diarrhoea, can cause dehydration
are taking medication to manage high blood pressure
have gallbladder problems
have a problem with your eyes or vision
are due to have surgery and require anaesthesia
have or have had severe heart failure

You should also let the doctor know before starting Foundayo about any prescribed, over the counter, or herbal medicines you are taking. Some medications can increase or decrease the concentration of orforglipron in your system, while Foundayo may also affect other medications. Tell the doctor if you are taking any of the following:

clarithromycin to treat bacterial infections
itraconazole or ketoconazole to treat fungal infections
ritonavir or telaprevir to treat viral infections
carbamazepine to treat seizures
bosentan for pulmonary hypertension
efavirenz to treat viral infections
rifampicin to treat bacterial infections
phenytoin to treat seizures
St. John’s wort
simvastatin to lower cholesterol
rosuvastatin for lowering cholesterol
topotecan to treat certain cancers
oral contraceptives – you will need to use a barrier method, such as condoms, or a non-oral contraception method for 30 days after starting Foundayo and for 30 days after each dose increase
