Switching from weight loss injections to Wegovy pills

The Wegovy pill is the newest GLP-1 weight loss treatment available in the UK. Like Wegovy and Mounjaro injections, it contains a GLP-1 which means it works by reducing appetite, helping you feel fuller for longer, and making it easier to lose weight while following a reduced-calorie diet.

In this guide, we explain how to switch from Wegovy or Mounjaro injections to Wegovy tablets, who may be suitable for switching, what changes you can expect, and how to manage any side effects during the transition.

How to switch from GLP-1 weight loss injections to Wegovy pills

If you’re already using a glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) weight loss injection, you can switch to Wegovy pills using our weight loss service. The exact Wegovy pill dose you start on depends on which injection you are currently using, your current dose, and whether you’re having any side effects.

Your doctor will help make sure the switch is made safely and with as little disruption to your treatment as possible.

Switching from Wegovy injections to pills

You should wait at least 1 week after your last Wegovy injection before starting Wegovy tablets. This is because the usual wait between injections is 7 days. This gives semaglutide time to lower to a safe amount to start tablets, so there is less chance of side effects.

The recommended switching schedule is:

Current Wegovy injection dose Wegovy pill dose
0.25mg (starting dose) 4mg
0.5mg 9mg
1mg 9mg
1.7mg 25mg (maximum dose)
2.4mg 25mg (maximum dose)
7.2mg (maximum dose) 25mg (maximum dose)

Switching from Mounjaro injections to Wegovy pills

Switching from Mounjaro injections to Wegovy pills is slightly different. Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, while Wegovy pills contain semaglutide. Both medications help control appetite and support weight loss, but tirzepatide also acts on an additional hormone pathway called GIP. Because of this, Mounjaro has completely different doses from Wegovy injections.

As with Wegovy, you should wait 1 week until your next injection would have been due before starting Wegovy tablets.

The recommended switching schedule is:

Current Mounjaro dose Wegovy pill dose
2.5mg (starting dose) 4mg
5mg 9mg
7.5mg 25mg (maximum dose)
10mg 25mg (maximum dose)
12.5mg 25mg (maximum dose)
15mg (maximum dose) 25mg (maximum dose)

Although people taking higher Mounjaro or Wegovy injection doses can usually move straight to 25mg tablets, your doctor may recommend a different approach depending on your response to treatment and any side effects you have or have experienced previously.

If you’re switching to a higher dose, the maximum time between stopping injections and starting Wegovy tablets should be 14 days, or you will need to start at the lowest dose.

Who can switch from weight loss injections to tablets?

Anyone taking weight loss injections can usually switch to Wegovy pills, provided the treatment is still suitable and safe for them. You usually need to have a body mass index (BMI) of over 30, or over 27 but less than 30 if you have a weight-related health condition, to start weight loss treatment.

However, you can also switch if you do not meet these requirements and your doctor agrees that this is suitable, which is known as an off-label prescription. For example, if you:

  • have lost weight with injections, but have not reached your goal weight yet
  • want to use Wegovy pills to maintain your weight, and injections have been working well for you, with no ongoing or severe side effects

➤ If you’re an existing ZAVA patient, log in to your account and request Wegovy pills, letting us know what you’re switching from and the reason for the switch. Our doctors will review your request and let you know the next steps, including what dose you’ll start on. If you’re a new patient but have been taking injections from another provider, we can still help you switch.

What are the benefits of switching from GLP-1 injections to tablets?

Switching to Wegovy pills may be a better option for some people, especially if you find injections inconvenient or uncomfortable, or you have a phobia of needles. Although both forms of treatment contain GLP-1 medication and work in a similar way, the daily tablet may fit better into some lifestyles.

Some benefits of switching from injections to tablets include:

no needles or injections one of the biggest advantages is that Wegovy pills do not require injections, which can be better if you dislike needles, have anxiety about self-injecting, find injections uncomfortable, or struggle to inject yourself without help

no injection site reactions injections can commonly cause reactions at the site of injection, and in some cases, this can make injections unsuitable if it persists or becomes severe

✓ easier storage and travel – Wegovy pills do not have any special temperature requirements, while injections must be stored in the fridge until opened, making tablets more convenient if you travel regularly for work or holidays

✓ fits into a daily routine if you prefer or are used to taking medication every morning and struggle to remember a weekly injection, taking a tablet alongside other daily habits may be better for you

✓ a different option during weight maintenance if you have already reached your weight loss goals and are moving into a maintenance phase, a daily tablet may feel less intrusive than long-term injections

✓ long-term cost – long-term Wegovy pills are cheaper

What to expect when switching from GLP-1 injections to tablets

You will continue to benefit from the effects of GLP-1 weight loss medication, such as appetite control, after switching to Wegovy pills. However, because your body is adjusting to a different form of medication and perhaps a new active ingredient, it can sometimes take several weeks for things to settle.

If you are switching from Wegovy injections:

Because both treatments contain semaglutide, the switch between Wegovy injections and pills is likely to be a smooth one.

During the first few weeks, you may notice:

  • similar appetite suppression to your injection
  • similar fullness after meals
  • mild digestive side effects as your body adjusts to the tablet version, as it’s taken by mouth rather than straight into your bloodstream
  • little change in your overall weight loss progress

Will I lose progress when switching from Wegovy injections to the Wegovy pill?

Your weight loss is likely to be very similar on Wegovy pills. The 2.4mg injection and the 25mg tablet are very comparable in effectiveness in clinical trials. People taking 2.4mg for 72 weeks lost 17% of their weight, while those taking 25mg Wegovy tablets after 64 weeks lost up to 17%.

Our doctors have also created the switching guide to make sure you move over from a high injection dose to a high tablet dose, so a loss of progress is unlikely.

If you are switching from Mounjaro:

Some people notice more of a change when moving from Mounjaro because tirzepatide is a different active ingredient, though it’s still a GLP-1 receptor agonist. Tirzepatide mimics 2 gut hormones rather than 1, which is thought to enhance its appetite-suppression and fullness effects. However, it can still be a good option if you cannot tolerate injections, need a lower-cost weight loss solution, or are ready to maintain your weight.

In the first few weeks of switching from Mounjaro to the Wegovy pill, you may notice:

  • temporary increases in hunger and changes in appetite levels
  • changes in fullness after meals
  • a short plateau in weight loss while your body adjusts

This does not mean the tablets are not working, but it can take time for semaglutide levels to build up in your system after switching treatments. This may be more noticeable if you start on a lower dose of the Wegovy pill, rather than 25mg.

Will I lose progress when switching from the Mounjaro injection to the Wegovy pill?

As you’re switching to a different active ingredient, you may notice a change in the first few weeks or for the first month, until semaglutide builds up in your system and your body adjusts. At the same time, tirzepatide will gradually leave your system, and the effects of that will wear off.

Mounjaro at the maximum maintenance dose of 15mg also has a slightly higher average weight loss than Wegovy pills, which is likely due to the fact that it mimics 2 hormones instead of 1. People on Mounjaro can lose an average 22.5% after 72 weeks, while the 25mg Wegovy pill causes an average of up to 17% after 64 weeks. This is a difference of 5.5%, but bear in mind that Mounjaro was also studied for 8 weeks longer.

This is one reason it may be recommended to switch to Wegovy pills from Mounjaro after achieving most of your target weight and while you’re focusing on maintaining your results rather than maximising further weight loss.

If you notice your weight loss is slowing down or is not the same after switching from injections, there are some things to keep in mind, such as:

  • you’re taking a different form of the medication – your body may need some time to adjust to a daily tablet
  • if you’re not taking the maximum dose yet – you may need to wait till you reach 25mg to see the full effects
  • if you’ve switched from tirzepatide – your body needs time for semaglutide to build up in your system and reach its full effect
  • the Wegovy pill must be taken properly – follow the instructions exactly as listed in your patient information leaflet, or the tablet may not be absorbed properly

Give your body a few weeks to adjust, but speak to your doctor if you’re worried your weight loss is not what it should be or your side effects are not settling. Make sure you know how to take the Wegovy pill properly, as it can lose its effectiveness if not taken on an empty stomach with a maximum of 120ml of plain water, 30 minutes before any other food, drinks, or other oral medications.

How to manage common side effects when switching

The side effects when switching to Wegovy pills are usually similar to those when starting any GLP-1 treatment, as side effects are very similar between Wegovy and Mounjaro. Most side effects are mild and improve as your body adjusts to your current dose.

Very common side effects that you notice while switching include:

  • feeling or being sick (nausea or vomiting)
  • diarrhoea
  • constipation
  • stomach pain
  • bloating
  • headache
  • tiredness

To help reduce side effects when switching, try:

  • eating smaller meals more often
  • choosing blander foods when side effects are worse
  • avoiding greasy, fatty, and spicy foods
  • stopping to eat when you feel comfortably full
  • drinking plenty of fluids, mostly plain water rather than caffeinated drinks
  • increasing your fluid intake and staying hydrated
  • gradually increasing fibre in your diet if you get constipation
  • staying physically active where possible
  • avoiding excessive alcohol consumption

Each person reacts differently to active ingredients, and tablets can cause different reactions too, as they are absorbed through the stomach. If side effects become severe, persistent, or affect your daily life, speak to your doctor. You may benefit from remaining on your current dose for longer before increasing.

Can you switch back to injections if the pill doesn’t suit you?

Yes. If Wegovy pills are not suitable for you, it’s possible to switch back to injections with the help of your doctor. It’s not recommended to keep switching between the two, and if you can, you should try to take Wegovy pills for a full month, or reach the maximum dose first. You may find that by this time, your side effects have settled and your weight loss has gone back to how it was on injections. This may give you more time to consider if the treatment really is right for you.

However, this is not the case for everyone. If you want to switch back to injections, here are the usual doses you can switch to from the Wegovy tablet.

Switching from Wegovy pills to Wegovy injections

Current Wegovy pill dose Wegovy injection dose
1.5mg (starting dose) 0.25mg (starting dose)
4mg 0.5mg
9mg 1mg
25mg (maximum maintenance dose) 1.7mg

Switching from Wegovy pills to Mounjaro injections

Current Wegovy pill dose Mounjaro injection dose
1.5mg (starting dose) 2.5mg (starting dose)
4mg 2.5mg (starting dose)
9mg 5mg
25mg (maximum maintenance dose) 7.5mg

As with switching to the Wegovy tablet from injections, if you have side effects, your doctor may recommend starting at a lower injection dose.

Make sure you’re 100% sure about switching before making the switch, as switching back and forth could delay your weight loss progress.

In summary

Switching from weight loss injections to Wegovy pills can be a convenient option if you prefer a daily tablet instead of a weekly injection or would like to try Wegovy pills for long-term maintenance.

Most people can switch safely with help from their doctor, although the dose you start on will depend on your current treatment dose and any side effects you might have experienced.

While you may go through a short adjustment period when switching, especially if moving from Mounjaro because it's a different active ingredient, most people can continue their weight loss journey successfully on oral Wegovy treatment.

Speaking to your doctor before switching will help make sure you move to the most appropriate dose and treatment to minimise the risk of side effects.

Frequently asked questions

Can you take Wegovy injections and tablets at the same time?

No. You should never take more than 1 type of GLP-1 medication at the same time, including Wegovy injections and tablets. This is the same as taking an overdose, and could cause severe and possibly dangerous side effects, such as dehydration from vomiting or pancreatitis.

Is the Wegovy pill cheaper than the injection?

Overall, the Wegovy pill is cheaper than the injection. However, the first dose of the Wegovy pill is priced slightly higher. You can find the most up-to-date pricing on the product pages for the Wegovy pill and Wegovy injection.

Can you stop taking Wegovy injections suddenly?

Yes, you can stop taking Wegovy injections without reducing your dose or gradually stopping injections. You will not get withdrawal symptoms from stopping suddenly, and if you’re switching to the pill, you’ll continue taking semaglutide 1 week after your last injection, which is when you’d usually take your next injection.

Are Wegovy pills more effective than injections?

Wegovy pills and injections have a similar effectiveness, especially when looking at the 25mg maintenance dose of Wegovy pills and the 2.4mg maintenance dose of injections. They both cause around an average 17% weight loss, in 64 weeks for the tablet and 72 weeks for the injection.

The newer, highest maintenance dose of Wegovy injections, 7.2mg, has been proven to cause slightly more weight loss, with an average 21% loss after 72 weeks. The 7.2mg injection also comes with a slightly higher chance of certain side effects.

Will you get withdrawal symptoms switching from injections to tablets?

No, you do not get withdrawal symptoms from stopping Wegovy or Mounjaro. However, you might get side effects from switching, or notice a change in appetite and fullness while your body adjusts between treatments, which should settle after a few weeks of daily treatment. This could be more noticeable when switching from Mounjaro, as the active ingredient is different, and it works on 2 hormone pathways rather than 1.
