Learn more about the available treatments

What weight loss treatments are available?

There are two main types of weight loss treatments available in the UK: injections and tablets. Both are licensed and work best alongside a healthy diet and exercise to support safe, effective weight loss.

Weight loss injections

Weight loss injections help reduce your appetite and make you feel fuller, so you naturally eat less. They are the most effective option for most people and can help you lose up to 22.5% of your body weight over time.

They come in easy-to-use pens that you inject yourself at home, usually once a week.

  • Mounjaro (tirzepatide) works on two natural hormones that control hunger and fullness
  • Wegovy (semaglutide) helps your body signal when you’ve eaten enough
  • Liraglutide (generic Saxenda) works in a similar way but is taken daily (currently out of stock)

Weight loss tablets

Weight loss tablets are an alternative if you prefer not to use injections. They are generally less effective but can still support weight loss.

  • Orlistat (Xenical, alli) reduces how much fat your body absorbs from food
  • Mysimba works on the brain to reduce appetite and cravings

Ongoing support

Whichever treatment you use, our doctors will review your progress and make sure it’s working safely for you.

You’ll also receive guidance from our doctors and in-house nutritionist, plus free messaging support through your patient account.

How much weight can I lose?

All prescription weight loss medications that have been approved for use in the UK are proven to help with weight loss in clinical trials. However, some weight loss medications are more effective than others.

Weight loss medication Effectiveness in clinical studies

Mounjaro

People lost up to 22.5% of their starting weight on the 15 mg maintenance dose after 72 weeks

Wegovy

People lost 21% of their starting weight on average on the maintenance dose after 1 year

Saxenda

People lost an average of 8% of their starting weight on the maintenance dose after 56 weeks

Orlistat

Found to help 37% of people lose 5% or more of their starting weight after 12 weeks

Xenical

Found to help 37% of people lose 5% or more of their starting weight after 12 weeks

alli

Found to help 46.7% of people lose 5% or more of their starting weight after 6 months

Mysimba

How quick will I see results?

Many patients notice early changes within the first few weeks, such as reduced cravings, less food noise, and improved control over eating. Weight loss typically develops steadily over time, becoming more noticeable as treatment continues.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects are quite common at the start of treatment or when increasing your dose. They’re usually mild and improve as your body adjusts.

The most common ones include nausea, stomach discomfort, or feeling full more quickly. We’ll guide you with simple tips to manage these, and you’ll have ongoing support if you need it.
