Find out what jelqing is, whether it's safe, and what our doctors recommend.

What is jelqing?

Jelqing is a penis enlargement exercise for men, intended to increase the length and girth of the penis. Jelqing is usually performed to enlarge erections, although there is little or no evidence to show that it actually works.

What is the technique?

In jelqing, the man takes his flaccid or semi-erect penis in a gentle grip between his thumb and index finger and pulls down from base to glans (head of the penis) in a fluid motion. This pulling exercise is repeated.

Jelqing should not be done for more than 10–15 minutes at a time, and never too vigorously. You should never experience any pain when jelqing, and should stop immediately if you do.

Jelqing is also known as ‘milking’ because it is a similar action to milking a cow.

Jelqing aids

Some men prefer to use machines or devices, instead of jelqing manually. There are several different versions of these that can be found online, including weighted devices, levers, or stretchers.

You should always be incredibly careful when using any devices on or around your genital area. Make sure that you only buy from websites that you trust, and remember to use your common sense when following instructions for use. If in doubt, check with your doctor before using the device.

Jelqing and Bathmate routine

Jelqing exercises can be performed alongside the use of other penis enlargement devices. The Bathmate is a popular penis pump used by men to help increase the length and size of their penis.

You can jelq and use the Bathmate in any order, but you must stop if you feel any pain or find yourself unable to gain a proper erection afterwards.

What are the results?

Jelqing is supposed to increase the size of your erection, and the increase overall length and girth of the penis. However, there is no evidence to show that jelqing has any results, and it can be dangerous if performed too roughly or frequently.

Does it work?

There is no medical evidence whatsoever to suggest that jelqing will increase the size of your penis.

However, some doctors recommend jelqing as a way for men to become more comfortable with their bodies and gain a better understanding of their erections. The technique can also help a man appreciate the difference in size between his penis when it is flaccid and erect.

Is it safe?

As long as you are gentle with your penis, jelqing should not be dangerous or unsafe. However, you should never handle your penis too roughly as this could lead to bruising or more permanent damage.

If you are going to jelq, it is a good idea to use a lubricant to avoid chafing, rubbing, or skin irritation. Jelqing should never be performed on an erect penis as this can cause pain or tear blood vessels.

Can jelqing cause erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) can occur as a result of trauma or injury to the penis, and so it is entirely possible that improper or dangerous jelqing can lead to ED. Injuries to the penis can happen if you do not warm up properly before jelqing, or if you jelq too roughly or for too long.

If you think you may have injured your penis as a result of jelqing, you should seek immediate medical attention.
