Viagra Connect is the first over-the-counter erectile dysfunction treatment created by Pfizer, which doesn’t need a prescription. It’s meant for men over the age of 18, who have difficulty getting and keeping erections. Viagra Connect can make getting and keeping erections easier by increasing the blood flow to the penis. It’s important to know that this medication will only work if you’re sexually aroused.

-
The main reason for Viagra Connect being an over-the-counter (OTC) medication is because it’s a safe way to improve people’s access to erectile dysfunction treatment.
The decision to offer an OTC Viagra medication in the UK was carefully considered:
- The proposal for an over-the-counter medication containing sildenafil citrate was announced 27th March 2017 by the MHRA
- There was a deadline of April 18th 2017 for feedback on this proposal
- Viagra Connect was announced by the MHRA on the 28th of November 2017
- Viagra Connect became available from Spring 2018 and available to buy online from ZAVA at the same time
Some of the arguments for making this change were outlined in the comments on the March 27th proposal. They included:
- Viagra was already available online, so making it available OTC helped give the same level of access to the medication in pharmacies
- Viagra Connect provided an extra option of face-to-face consultation with pharmacists in store
- Pharmacists would still have to use the same standards of assessment as online doctor services and were able to get trained to meet these standards
- The plan to sell Viagra Connect was considered safe and patient-centred
- It was intended to take some pressure off of GPs’ time
- The change was made to help improve the way Viagra is regulated in the UK, making it safer to buy
- It was meant to help a wider range of men with erection problems get help
- It was meant to reduce the number of men looking to buy treatment for their erectile dysfunction illegally
Pfizer (the manufacturer of Viagra and Viagra Connect) released a statement about the change and it was also covered by the Guardian and the BBC.

Viagra Connect works by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis so that blood can flow into it more easily when you’re aroused, which helps make erections easier. Viagra Connect works for up to 74% of men who try it. But, it’ll only work if you’re sexually aroused and you’ll need to take one tablet, about an hour before sex.
-
-
How to take Viagra Connect:
- You should swallow one tablet whole with water an hour before sex
- It may start to work sooner than one hour, with some men seeing effects between 12 minutes and 30 minutes after taking it. But the maximum potential is still only reached after about an hour
- If it doesn’t work after taking it for the first time, don’t worry, you can try again the next day. But, you can only take one tablet per day
- It may take up to 4 tries before you see the full effects
- If you find that after 4 separate tries, Viagra Connect doesn’t work for you at all, you should think about trying higher dosage or an alternative treatment
- It’s important to remember that Viagra Connect is not meant to give you an erection directly, and you need to be sexually aroused in order for it to work.
- It’s best to avoid alcohol and heavy meals because they will reduce the effectiveness of Viagra Connect
-
-
Viagra Connect can be a good choice for men over the age of 18 who have erectile dysfunction symptoms. It’s a good idea to think about getting treatment because it can quickly improve your sexual performance and make your erections more reliable.
It’s important to note that if you have any of the following health conditions, Viagra Connect won’t be the right treatment for you:
- Any history of loss of sight or a family history of eye problems
- Conditions like sickle-cell anaemia, multiple myeloma, or leukaemia
- Any history of serious problems with your kidneys
- Any history of liver problems
- Heart problems: but this depends on what they are and how serious they are
- Uncontrolled high blood pressure: but not if your blood pressure is under control
- Any breathing problems or chest pains during exercise
Viagra Connect also won’t be right for you if you’re taking some other medications:
- Other PDE5-inhibitors, like Sildenafil or Cialis (Tadalafil)
- CYP3A4 inhibitors
- Guanylate cyclase stimulators
- Alpha-blockers
- Nitrates: including amyl nitrates (poppers)
